The Association of Retired Conservationists was organized by a group of retirees from the Wisconsin Conservation Department in the 1960's. By the mid-1970's, the WCD had been combined with the Department of Resource Development to form the Department of Natural Resources, and the retirees group had grown significantly, met monthly for lunch and began inviting speakers to address the group on issues of interest to the members. Today, the organization has more than two hundred members.

HELP PREVENT THE SPREAD OF INVASIVE SPECIES

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) asks the public to take simple precautions to avoid spreading invasive plants and animals in June, which is Invasive Species Action Month, and all year long.

Invasive species are nonnative plants, animals and diseases that cause great ecological, environmental or economic harm. Some have already been found in Wisconsin, while others pose a large risk of surviving and causing problems if they are introduced and established here.

The states invasive species rule makes it illegal to possess, transport, transfer or introduce certain invasive species in Wisconsin without a permit. The regulations designate which species are Restricted or Prohibited based on factors including the degree of harm they may cause to people, the native ecology or the economy.

Subject: NW Region WDNR Retirees Lunch schedule

We meet for lunch monthly, except in winter. We order and pay for our meals individually. Spouses, guests, etc. are welcome to join us. We generally start meeting at 11:00 and eat at noon. Exceptions are noted in the restaurant info below.

Our group is basically DNR retirees from the Rhinelander, Woodruff, Tomahawk, and Antigo offices and field stations in those areas. We have a few members from Wausau, Park Falls, Mercer, etc. Retirees from other parts of the state who now live in the area are welcome, also. Folks who have moved out of the area may remain on the email list. Some on the list are spouses of deceased retirees, who have requested to remain on.

There are about 170 on the list. Because spam controls limit the number of addresses I can send at one time, I must send each message four times. I need to investigate alternatives, but Im not that smart!

Now for the lunches! We start meeting at 11:00, with lunch at noon, maybe a little earlier if it works better for the restaurant. I try to send a reminder about a week ahead.

SPRING HEARINGS PROVIDE LATET LANDSLIDE CALL FOR ACTION ON WAKE-ENHANCED BOATING

PAUL A. SMITH Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

It can be challenging to get an accurate gauge of public sentiment.

Just ask professional pollsters who wade into political waters. To be fair, the roughly 50:50 split in many elections makes predictions about as accurate as a coin toss.

But an issue in the Wisconsin outdoors has emerged in recent years that leaves no doubt about how a strong majority of state residents feel.

GENERAL INLAND FISHING SEASON OPENS MAY 4 DNR REMINDS ANGLERS OF NEW REGULATIONS

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds anglers the 2024-2025 general inland fishing season will open on Saturday, May 4.

Fisheries biologists expect anglers to find success on opening day. This year, new fishing regulations are in effect, including a new small tournament registration requirement and a statewide daily bag limit of three walleye/sauger per day on all inland waters. There are also bag and length limit changes for fish species in the following counties: Brown, Chippewa, Dane, Dunn, Eau Claire, Iowa, Iron, Lincoln, Manitowoc, Marathon, Marquette, Oconto, Pierce, Polk, Portage, Price, Rusk, Sauk, Sawyer, St. Croix, Taylor, Vilas, Walworth, Waukesha and Waushara.
